Historically, heavy manufacturing, energy production and petroleum processing have been the foundations of Pennsylvania’s economy, making the Keystone State a hub of STEM activity. Food and chemical production have also become large sectors of the economy.
The majority of the state’s STEM Premier students are located in Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and Harrisburg, although Newcastle and Allentown boast a significant presence as well. The top occupational interests of Pennsylvania’s students include biological science, computer science and programming, surgery, and mechanical engineering.
ACT's report on STEM in Pennsylvania optimistically finds that interest in STEM has increased steadily over the past five years, from 47% in 2011 to 53% in 2015. Healthcare is the predominant STEM area of attraction, with 38% of students expressing interest. This is followed by other natural sciences (26%) and engineering (26%). Math and computer science (10%) are the areas of lowest interest.
