The Tar Heel State is the next stop in our series of state spotlights! Having recently surpassed 2,500 student members on the STEM Premier platform, North Carolina isn’t just about college basketball anymore!

Among North Carolina’s student users are 275 Project Lead the Way students, 180 National Honor Society members, and 175 members of HOSA - Future Health Professionals.

North Carolina’s student users come from far and wide across the state, from Kitty Hawk (home of the Wright Brother’s own little STEM project…) all the way west to Murphy near the Tennessee border. And while the state’s larger cities, such as Charlotte and Raleigh, boast high concentrations of users, it’s important to note that rural areas have just as much of a footprint in our student database.

The top occupational interests of North Carolina’s students include surgery, nursing, pediatrics, computer science, and mechanical engineering.

According to ACT’s Condition of STEM Report, North Carolina’s student interest in the STEM fields has remained steady over the past few years at 50%, but continues to outpace the national average of 48%. The steadiness of student interest can be attributed to a decline of student interest in the medical and science fields, but also a substantial increase in the engineering, mathematics, and computing fields.
