With Atlanta serving as a regional and national economic hub, several household names including Delta Airlines, Coca-Cola, Home Depot, and UPS call Georgia home. Manufacturing is currently a large part of the Peach State’s economy with textiles being especially prevalent.
Mirroring the nation-wide trend, healthcare is an especially fast-growing industry in Georgia. According to Georgia Department of Labor projections, some of the fastest growing occupations in the state include physician’s assistants, personal care aides, nurse practitioners, and audiologists. However, healthcare occupations are not the only jobs projected to be in high demand; Interpreters, translators, and event planners also top the list.
Like much of Georgia’s economic activity and population, STEM Premier’s student base is primarily located in the Metro-Atlanta area. Their top occupational interests include biological scientists, surgeons, mechanical engineers, and computer scientists. Female students are especially well represented, comprising 61% of STEM Premier’s students within Georgia’s borders.
ACT notes that overall student interest in STEM areas has increased 3% between 2011 and 2015 and STEM interest in Georgia currently outpaces the national average. Furthermore, Georgia’s students are most drawn to the medical field which is a good sign, considering the state’s projected areas of occupational growth.
